In 1974, The Regional Municipality of Halton was formed, replacing its predecessor Halton County. As an upper-tier government, the region represents the communities of Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville.
The Regional Municipality of Halton is divided into different departments consisting of:

- Legislative and Planning Services
- Finance
- Health
- Public Works
- Social and Community Services

Four Local Municipalities
The City of Burlington, The Town of Halton Hills, The Town of Milton, and the Town of Oakville provide services including: firefighting, parks, recreation, public transit, public libraries, snow removal, and other services.
