In February 2011, Halton Region responded to a request for proposals from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration to develop an immigration portal intended to improve newcomer access to municipal services, promote the municipality as a destination for newcomers, and improve settlement and employment outcomes.
The Halton Newcomer Portal project was anchored in the work of the Halton Newcomer Strategy - a community-based movement working to ensure Halton is a welcoming, inclusive and supportive community in which newcomers can participate and prosper. Started in 2010, the newcomer strategy group is made up of newcomers, business representatives, government, academic institutions, community organizations, and local citizens. A local newcomer portal is well aligned with the work of the group, and offers a valuable tool to advance Halton Newcomer Strategy objectives.
Development of this site has involved extensive consultation and partnerships. The Halton Newcomer Portal is a resource that was developed by the community, for the community. We are excited with the finished product and believe the implementation of the Halton Newcomer Portal will successfully promote the Region as a destination of choice, as well as assist and support newcomers currently residing in Halton or looking to do so in future.  We wish to thank Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration for their support of this important initiative and look forward to sharing the success of the Halton Newcomer Portal.
